Choose the kind of coloring you want.
A quiet single bird
The rounded songbird and short twig leave large spaces. Start with the breast, then choose a different wing color.
Round songbird on a twig ↗A family at home
The nest introduces smaller woven lines around the birds. Keep those lines lighter if you want the family to lead.
Songbird and three chicks ↗An owl in flight
Spread wings create a different silhouette. Repeat a color across matching feather sections or alternate two shades.
Owl with open wings ↗Follow the direction of the feathers.
On paper, work from the base of a feather toward its tip with light strokes. A broad wing can stay smooth while a few smaller feather groups get more detail. Leave a small highlight in the eye if it is available in the outline.
For water birds, use horizontal marks in the pond and shorter marks on the body. For a nest scene, give the nest a restrained color so its many lines do not overwhelm the faces. The drawings are decorative illustrations, not field-guide plates.
Try a small project
Use the same three colors on a perched bird and a flying bird. Let the wing pattern connect the pair.
