Give each material its own kind of surface.

Try smooth, even color on the pottery bowl and a few directional pencil marks on the apron. For patchwork, choose three or four colors before starting, then repeat them across the squares; a quiet patch between busier motifs can give your eye somewhere to rest. On the paper-collage page, use flat blocks of color so the circle, triangle and house remain clear.

The drawing and painting scenes contain pictures inside the picture. You can match a painted flower to the surrounding scene or give it a separate palette. Keep the sketchbook paper white if you want the little drawing to stand out. Extra fabric patterns and pencil textures are paper activities; online coloring works with the regions already enclosed by the artwork.

Try a small project

Use the sunflower-sketcher page for two versions of one flower: color the garden sunflower in warm yellow and orange, then try blue and violet in the tiny sketchbook drawing. Keep the rest of the scene quieter so you can compare the two.
