Give food, glass and tablecloths different treatments.

On paper, leave a small pale patch on a round apple or orange and deepen the opposite edge if you want a simple shine. For bread, start with a light warm layer and use a deeper brown near the crust or scoring. Flat bright colors also work well, especially on the larger fruit shapes.

Keep glass outlines visible by using a very light tint for the container and a stronger shade for the drink inside. On the picnic cloth, repeat two colors across the checks so the fabric supports the food rather than competing with it. In the pantry, group similar jars with related colors and save one accent for a pumpkin, onion or bunch of herbs. Added highlights and texture are paper techniques; online filling follows the existing enclosed areas.

Try a small project
