Choose a room palette before decorating every object.

Pick a quiet color for the largest surface, such as a wall, chair or quilt, then choose one stronger accent for a cushion, mug or lamp. Repeat that accent in two or three places to connect the room. In the bookshop, group several neighboring books in related colors instead of giving every spine an unrelated shade.

On paper, make fabric and wood feel different through your marks: light strokes along a shelf for wood, small crossing marks on a cushion for woven fabric. Leave window panes pale so the furniture stays easy to see. At the rainy seat, a warmer cushion and cooler window view can distinguish inside from outside. Use the existing enclosed regions for online color; extra textile patterns are something to add to the print.
