Let the mane and body use different marks.

On paper, follow the mane with long curved strokes and use shorter, lighter layers across the body. Leave a pale strip along a leg or shoulder if you want a simple highlight. The drawing leaves coat markings open for you to invent.

For a field scene, choose a background that is lighter or darker than the horse so the outline stays clear. A pale chestnut horse can sit against muted green; an imaginary blue horse can stand against warm grass. Online, fill the enclosed regions; extra hair marks are a printed-page option.
