- Choose the number of colors. Kite day and the sailboat use four colors. The flower box uses five; most other pictures use six. The robot has eight matches and smaller areas.
- Make your key. Find a pencil or crayon for each written color name. Say the number and color together, then look for all areas with that number.
- Color and compare. Each number sits inside one closed area. Follow that area’s boundary, and use the answer picture to check a match when helpful. Unnumbered areas can stay white.
The eight subjects are a kite, sailboat, flower box, rocket, butterfly, cupcake, robot and turtle. Each uses an individually composed arrangement of closed vector shapes, with broad areas and smaller details.
Color names are written beside numbers, so the key does not depend on distinguishing colored swatches. For another approach, assign a pattern to each number—dots, stripes or zigzags—and keep that pattern consistent. A helper can read the instructions or identify a region aloud.
