One outline can turn into many discoveries.
- Start with a named shape. Look at its large outline, follow the boundary with a finger, then find the four matching shapes. Sizes and turns vary.
- Mix the shapes. Try the twenty-shape hunt, sort straight and curved boundaries, or connect the five rotated matches.
- Read a small picture. Count the twelve labeled outlines in the town. The square windows sit inside the long rectangle houses, so count each labeled outline once.
Ten shapes are included: circle, triangle, square, long rectangle, stretched oval, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, five-point star and heart. These are selected examples, not a complete list of every possible shape.
A square is a special rectangle. The rectangle tasks ask for long rectangles to make the intended answer clear. The stretched oval examples are ellipses; a circle is a special ellipse. A five-point star has ten boundary edges.

The shape hunt
Every named shape appears twice. The position reference covers all twenty cells.
- Circle: row 2, column 3; row 3, column 5.
- Triangle: row 3, column 2; row 3, column 4.
- Square: row 1, column 2; row 1, column 5.
- Long rectangle: row 4, column 1; row 4, column 2.
- Stretched oval: row 1, column 3; row 1, column 4.
- Pentagon: row 2, column 2; row 3, column 3.
- Hexagon: row 1, column 1; row 4, column 5.
- Octagon: row 2, column 5; row 4, column 3.
- Five-point star: row 2, column 1; row 4, column 4.

Straight sides or curves?
Only straight sides: B, D, E, G, H, I, K.
Some curved boundary: A, C, F, J, L.
The side-count challenge answers are triangle: 3; pentagon: 5; hexagon: 6; octagon: 8. A five-point star has ten straight boundary edges, with five outward points and five inward corners.

A town made of shapes

Count the twelve lettered outlines. A square is also a rectangle; this activity distinguishes the long rectangles from the square windows.
