An open tall shape

Large patches break up the giraffe without filling the page with tiny detail. Try two related colors for body and patches.

Two zebras gather by water. Follow one stripe at a time and leave some spaces white to keep the pattern readable.

Use the animal’s pattern as the starting plan.

For zebras, the blank spaces matter as much as the colored stripes. For giraffes, a repeated patch color can tie the whole body together. Elephant skin can be a single flat color or several light pencil layers; these illustrations do not require realistic palettes.

Keep distant ground quieter than the main animal. In a pair or family scene, repeat one accent but change its strength so the animals remain separate. The drawings are imaginative coloring scenes, not species-identification or habitat diagrams.

Try a small project

Choose two very different silhouettes and use the same four colors on both. Change which color covers the largest area and compare the result.
