Build a coat pattern without losing the cat.

Choose the fur color before the surroundings. For a tabby effect, make short stripes that follow the curve of the body; keep the face marks smaller than the body marks. For a patched coat, sketch a few broad shapes lightly in pencil before filling them. The outlines do not require a particular breed or coat color.

On a group page, give each cat one identifying feature—a tail tip, ear patch or collar color—then repeat a quiet background color to bring the scene together. In the online studio, use the enclosed regions already in the drawing; extra fur marks and shading are a paper activity.

Try a small project
