Give the imagined place one color rule of its own.

Choose something that repeats across your world: every doorway could be turquoise, every roof could be pink, or every magical object could share a gold accent. Keep nearby walls, leaves and paths quieter so that repeated color stands out. On the teacup house, separate the cup from its flower roof with different lightness as well as different hues.

For the storybook portal, keep the paper beneath the world pale and give the rising landscape stronger color. A crystal or lantern can look bright if you leave part of it white and darken the space around it on paper. On the leaf boat, repeat a leaf color in the lily pads but choose a contrasting flower umbrella so the travelers remain the main focus.

Try a small project

Turn the teacup house and leaf-boat page into the start and middle of a journey. Repeat the house-door color in the boat scene, then draw a separate page showing the travelers’ destination.
