Make fur, fabric and scenery feel different.

Use short marks for a textured coat and smoother strokes for the background. Let the direction change around the shoulder and body instead of drawing every mark straight down. A very pale first layer leaves room to darken small patches after you see the whole picture.

On the beach page, separate the dog from the sand with a different lightness, even if both use warm browns. In the porch and garden scenes, keep one bright accent for a collar, cushion or toy. You can use familiar animal colors or make the dog entirely imaginary.

Try a small project
